Marukyu Yaki Negi Chibikko Miso, Grilled Shimonita Leek (丸久物産 焼ねぎちびっこ味噌)
The story behind it
Shimonita negi is a thick leek grown mainly around Shimonita Town in Gunma Prefecture. Raw it is fiercely pungent, but cooked it turns startlingly sweet, which is why it has long been considered essential to hot pot and sukiyaki.
This Yaki Negi Miso takes that leek, grills it, and combines it with miso made in Gunma Prefecture. The sweetness the heat draws out locks together with the salt of the miso, and it is good enough to eat straight as a side dish.
If miso as a seasoning is something you dissolve into soup, this is something you spoon on top. It is a local product in the real sense: Gunma ingredients meeting Gunma miso.
How to use it
Spoon it onto freshly cooked rice. Spreading it on a rice ball and grilling it is also worth trying. Dab it on raw cucumber or daikon and it becomes a snack with a drink.
